Team Incycle-Predator tests ORAL IV for Cycling and Hydration

Last month we were contacted by a group that focuses on relief projects for third world countries. They wanted to test ORAL IV on a cycling team that would be in a high exertion situation. We promptly obliged to provide product for their test. Below is the report from the Team Incycle-Predator.

La Vuelta Independencia 2014 is UCI 2.2 competitive cycling event that covers approx. 1050 KM in 8 days of competition. It is a premier cycling event in Latin America celebrated in the Dominican Republic from February 20-27, 2014. The following information is based on six riders from Team Incycle-Predator during competition in this cycling event.

Pre-Race Day- Riders were instructed to take one dose of ORAL IV before bedtime and one dose of ORAL IV an hour before the race. Rider’s routine and supplement intake will remain the same.

Stage 1- 148Km - Santo Domingo- San Pedro de Macoris- Santo Domingo

  • Terrain- Mostly flat with strong crosswinds and headwinds, Weather Conditions- Temp 86 F, Wind 10-14 mph, and Humidity 82%
  • Time of 1st Dose of ORAL IV- 1 hr. before competition
  • Hydration Procedure- approx. 1 bottle of water/liquid per hour, Total Intake of ORAL IV 2-3 during competition
  • Food Intake- Bars, gels, bananas
  • Urination Color- Between 2-4 using the Urine Color Chart

Riders Input- No cramping, no dizziness, no nausea, normal muscle fatigue, rider’s focus normal. Riders were prolonging their hydration intake, therefore using less liquid consumption than other riders.

Stage 2- 177Km - Santo Domingo- Samana

  • Terrain-Rolling hills with two cat. 3 climbs, crosswinds, Weather Conditions- Temp 85 F, Wind 9-12 mph, Humidity 78%
  • Time of 1st Dose of ORAL IV- 1 hr. before competition.
  • Hydration Procedure- approx. 1 bottle of water/liquid per hour, Total Intake of ORAL IV- 3-5 during competition.
  • Food Intake- Bars, gels, bananas
  • Urination Color- Between 3-5 using the Urine Color Chart.

Riders Input- Some experience light cramping at the end of the race, no dizziness, no nausea, normal muscle fatigue. Riders were prolonging their hydration intake, therefore using less liquid consumption than other riders. Rider’s suggestion was to increase the ORAL IV dose for the following stages.

Stage 3- 136Km - Samana- Nagua- Castillo- San Francisco de Macoris

  • Terrain- Rolling hills, one Cat. 3 climb, Weather Conditions- Temp 83 F, Wind 6-9 mph, Humidity76%, light rain showers, strong crosswinds
  • Time of 1st Dose of ORAL IV- 1 hr. before competition
  • Hydration Procedure- approx. 1 bottle of water/liquid per hour, Total Intake of ORAL IV 3-4 during competition
  • Food Intake- Bars, gels, bananas
  • Urination Color- Between 2-4 using the Urine Color Chart

Riders Input- No cramping, no dizziness, no nausea, normal muscle fatigue, rider’s focus normal. Riders were prolonging their hydration intake, therefore using less liquid consumption than other riders. The average cyclist around this time of the competition will experience loss of liquid retention and will appear to be dehydrated due to the loss of liquids. Our riders look healthier and appear to have normal water retention. 

Stage 4- 104Km - Road Circuit Santiago 6.5Km per lap, 16 Laps

  • Terrain- Rolling hills, Weather Conditions- Temp 83 F , wind 6-8 mph crosswind, Humidity 79%, Rain showers
  • Time of 1st Dose of ORAL IV- 1 hr. before competition
  • Hydration Procedure- approx. 1 bottle of water/liquid per hour, Total Intake of ORAL IV 2-3 during competition
  • Food Intake- Bars, gels, bananas
  • Urination Color- Between 2-4 using the Urine Color Chart

Stage 5- 112Km - Moca- La Vega- Jarabacoa- Constanza

  • Terrain-Hilly road, two Cat.3 climbs, three Cat.2 climbs, extremely difficult terrain. Weather Conditions- Temp 81 F, Wind 06-08 mph, Humidity 79%
  • Time of 1st Dose of ORAL IV- 1 hr. before competition
  • Hydration Procedure- approx. 1 bottle of water/liquid per hour, Total Intake of ORAL IV 3-4 during competition
  • Food Intake- Bars, gels, bananas
  • Urination Color- Between 3-5 using the Urine Color Chart

Riders Input- No cramping, no dizziness, no nausea, normal muscle fatigue, rider’s focus normal. Riders were prolonging their hydration intake, therefore using less liquid consumption than other riders. Our riders appear to be better hydrated at the end of the stage. 

Stage 6- 111.4Km (part 1), Time Trial 10Km (part 2)

Part 1- La Vega- Santo Domingo o Terrain- Rolling hills, one Cat.3 climb, crosswind. Weather Conditions- Temp 84 F, Wind 9-12 mph, Humidity 78%

Part 2- Mirador Sur 10km TT one lap o Terrain- Mostly flat. Weather Conditions- Temp 82 F, Wind 9 mph, Humidity 66%

  • Time of 1st Dose of ORAL IV- 1 hr. before competition
  • Hydration Procedure- approx. 1 bottle of water/liquid per hour, Total Intake of ORAL IV 2-3 during competition
  • Food Intake- Bars, gels, bananas
  • Urination Color- Between 2-4 using the Urine Color Chart

Riders Input- No cramping, no dizziness, no nausea, normal muscle fatigue, rider’s focus normal. Riders were prolonging their hydration intake, therefore using less liquid consumption than other riders. The Team experimented using the ORAL IV in several marked bottles giving the riders the benefit of having the dose mix with electrolytes and supplements, the result was less liquid consumption and better performance during the stage.

Stage 7- 163Km - San Cristobal- Bani- Santo Domingo

  • Terrain- Rolling hills, three Cat.3 climbs, crosswinds. Weather Conditions- Temp 84 F, Wind 7-9 mph, Humidity 76%
  • Time of 1st Dose of ORAL IV- 1 hr. before competition
  • Hydration Procedure- approx. 1 bottle of water/liquid per hour, Total Intake of ORAL IV- 3-5 during competition
  • Food Intake- Bars, gels, bananas
  • Urination Color- Between 3-6 using the Urine Color Chart

Riders Input- No cramping (5 riders), no dizziness, no nausea, normal muscle fatigue, rider’s focus normal. Riders were prolonging their hydration intake, therefore using less liquid consumption than other riders. One rider experience light cramping after the race.

Stage 8- 84Km - Road Circuit Santo Domingo 6Km per lap, 14 laps

  • Terrain- Mostly flat, short circuit, Weather Conditions- Temp 81 F, Wind 4-6 mph, Humidity 84%
  • Time of 1st Dose of ORAL IV- 1 hr. before competition
  • Hydration Procedure- approx. 1 bottle of water/liquid per hour, Total Intake of ORAL IV 2 during competition
  • Food Intake- Bars, gels, bananas
  • Urination Color- Between 2-4 using the Urine Color Chart

Riders Input- No cramping, no dizziness, no nausea, normal muscle fatigue, rider’s focus normal. Riders were prolonging their hydration intake, therefore using less liquid consumption than other riders. 

Overall Observations- Our riders experience better liquid consumption, better hydration and less or no cramping than most riders during competition. Even our Staff tried the ORAL IV during the event and experience better hydration during this time by taking 1 dose in the morning and a 2nd dose during mid-day.
